In January, we decided to take a little trip to a warmer clime and, more importantly, Barb wanted to visit the casinos in Tunica, MS and spend some money she'd won at bingo. We had three nights of comped rooms at Sam's Town and decided to make a long weekend of it. We drove down Friday and came home on Monday. It's about a 6 hour drive from Terre Haute depending on how fast you drive and how strong your bladder is.
I could do without ever visiting a casino but when the rooms are free and Barb plays enough that they also comp our meals it's hard to ignore them. Plus in the Tunica area casinos the drinks are free. Occasionally, Barb even wins, so the combination means cheaper and/or longer vacations which is always good...did I mention the drinks were free?
Saturday we drove up to Memphis to go to the zoo and also hit Beale street after for dinner. We also drove out of the way to check out the local Texas Roadhouse for later, you know we always find the roadhouses, but ended up not finding time to eat there. It was a rainy, misty, cool kind of day that turned out to be great for going to the zoo. All the animals were out and active and it kept the people away. At times we felt like we had the zoo to ourselves.
The zoo itself was a pleasant surprise. It was very clean, well-kept, and the animals all looked healthy and in great shape. It's not a large zoo but has a wide representation of species. It's pretty well laid out and doesn't require a lot of back-tracking to see everything. The trolley, though it wasn't running when we visited, is a dollar and you can get on/off at all stops. As you know by now, I have a bad back and the walking wreaks havoc with my legs and prompts frequent stops and slow walks, not to mention constant pain. It would have been nice to not have to walk the whole zoo.
The best areas, to me, are the primate area and the polar bear exhibit. My best memory of the zoo was while in the African area with the zebras and giraffes. From the primate area nearby a black gibbon called the siamang started making this loud raucous call. Before long other animals started a ruckus too and soon it really sounded like the jungle. I closed my eyes and I swear it made the neck hair stand up to be in the dark and hear all the jungle sounds for real. It was an amazing feeling especially with no other humans around, except Barb. I couldn't get around to it in time to get pics they all went back inside... must have been feeding time.
All in all, very pleased with the zoo, it was great and we had a fun time. We will go back and it's easy to recommend this zoo to anyone visiting the Memphis, TN area. Don't forget to check out the pics on the right...we got some good ones!
See ya later
